Waterproof jewelry materials resistant to water
Jewelry can be made from different materials. Let's review which of them are the most common and the water resistance of each one.
- Stainless steel: It is the key material to determine if a piece of jewellery is suitable for putting in water, especially if we are talking about jewellery for putting in the sea. It is important to clarify that, above all stainless steel, almost all jewellery is plated with 18 carat gold. This means that the steel will not rust, but over time it may lose its shine.
- Gold: In its purest form, the metal is not damaged by water and cannot be oxidised, as it does not react chemically to O2. But be careful! Gold is usually coated with a thin layer of rhodium, which serves to make it shine or even change its colour. In this case, it could lose its shine over time.
- 925 silver or sterling silver: It is called this because it is made up of 92.5% silver, making it one of the purest metals. It is a very resistant metal but can lose its shine with water over time. Normal contact with tap water and without salt has no adverse effect on the jewel, but it can be damaged if it comes into contact with sunscreens or other cleaning substances.
-
Brass: It is a very ductile and resistant material at the same time. Unlike 925 silver jewelry (which is plated), it is usually plated with 1 micron (1 millimeter) achieving a higher percentage of gold in each piece and greater durability of the shine. It can oxidize, if as we have said, it is not plated with 1 micron of gold, since its components are zinc, copper and tin. In this case, the metal begins to turn blacker, greenish or bluish, which can be removed with some techniques to recover its color and shine.

What types of waterproof stainless steel jewelry are there?
We are going to make a list of the different types of waterproof jewelry that we can find and while we are at it, we are going to see some very cool ones to use in summer =)
Waterproof earrings that do not rust
Waterproof earrings are the most sensitive type of jewelry because, unlike a ring or necklace, earrings have a hook pin that can become damaged and even rust over time. That is why we recommend buying quality waterproof earrings to avoid problems.

Waterproof rings resistant to water
Rings are the most water-resistant pieces of jewelry, as they generally do not have as many sensitive elements as an earring. They require “less attention,” but not less care. As with other jewelry, overexposure to adverse conditions can damage any of them.

Waterproof stainless steel necklaces
We believe that necklaces, along with earrings, are the jewels that we have to be most careful with. Especially when we bathe in the sea, since with these jewels we run another risk of getting them caught and losing them. Although it may not seem like it, they are one of the most common things in summer when we get into the water with any type of jewel.
Just like with waterproof rings or earrings, when buying we have to make sure that they are made of steel so that they do not rust over time and have greater water resistance.

Waterproof stainless steel bracelets
We believe that they are the most versatile pieces of jewellery for summer and that they can give our look a bit of colour and loosen up any outfit. If we don't dare to wear coloured earrings or necklaces with stones, which are a great alternative, bracelets are the key to breaking things up a bit. Obviously, whenever we buy bracelets, even if they are a mix of steel jewellery and colourful stones, we must be sure that they are made of waterproof stainless steel and water-resistant stones.

- FAQs - Jewelry and contact with water
Can stainless steel get wet?
Yes, it can get wet without any problems (even in the sea) and the parts should not be damaged. Although we recommend that you always take a freshwater bath after leaving the sea.
The problem is that the gold plating on stainless steel jewelry can lose its shine over time.
Can silver jewelry rust with water?
Silver does not oxidize, and it does not react to oxygen. The jewel can be damaged if the water contains sulfur. This chemical element will dull the silver, giving it a yellow or blackish tone. -Other factors that can damage silver are the products we use daily such as makeup, creams or fragrances, so it is recommended to remove the jewelry to apply products of this style.
